The victim was murdered in Bakra Piri, Banaras as she chose to marry someone of her liking, they added.

The suspect fled the scene “immediately” after the shooting, the police claimed as they investigated the killing.

“Efforts are under way to apprehend the perpetrator,” Superintendent Police Faheem Farooqi said.

The trend has been concerning, as the previous two years also recorded a steady increase in murders linked to the so-called ‘honour’ killings.
