This tremor follows closely on the heels of a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that caused damage in the central town of San Francisco, Leyte province, earlier on Thursday.

The Mindanao quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the Philippines, situated within the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” an area known for its volcanic activity and seismic events.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) noted that the earlier earthquake resulted in at least 45 aftershocks.

Police Major Barnie Catig, the police chief of San Francisco, described the quake as brief but powerful, stating, “It was strong; some of the picture frames in our shelves fell off.”

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but at least 18 houses and government buildings sustained minor damage.

Some highways developed fissures from the tremor, although they remain passable. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and monitor for further seismic activity.
