Lawyers for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have prepared appeals against their convictions in the £190 million pound reference. The appeals are expected to be filed in the Islamabad High Court on January 21.

Barristers Salman Safdar and Khalid Yousaf Chaudhry will represent Khan and Bushra. Their power of attorney documents have been submitted to Adiala Jail authorities for the defendants’ signatures. Jail officials are expected to return the signed documents to the lawyers on Monday.

Lawyer Khalid Yousaf confirmed that the jail authorities have received the documents but did not allow the lawyers access to the prisoners.

On January 17, Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, found Imran Khan guilty and sentenced him to 14 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs1 million, with an additional 6 months imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

Bushra Bibi received a 7-year sentence and a Rs500,000 fine, with an additional 3 months imprisonment if unpaid. She was arrested immediately following the verdict.

The Accountability Court also ordered the Al-Qadir University to be taken into government control.
