The arrest of the man who attacked Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan with a knife has been shrouded in conflicting reports from Indian media. Initially identified as 31-year-old Akash Kanojia, apprehended on a train from Chhattisgarh, the suspect’s identity has since been called into question.

Indian media outlets now claim the attacker’s name is Mohammed Shariful Islam Shahzad, a Bangladeshi national working for a housekeeping agency in Thane. He was reportedly arrested near a metro construction site in the Hiranandani Estate area.

The discrepancy in reporting has raised eyebrows. While initially identified as Akash Kanojia, police now assert that the attacker used several aliases, including Bijoy Das, Vijay Das, Mohammed Elias, and BJ. A Mumbai police official revealed that documents recovered from Mohammed Shariful Islam Shahzad indicate he is a Bangladeshi citizen who entered India illegally.

Police stated that the suspect had been working in various locations across Mumbai and Thane for the past seven to eight months, most recently at a construction site with a contractor.

Following the attack on Saif Ali Khan, he reportedly monitored news channels, tracking coverage of the incident, and switched off his phone fearing arrest.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra West residence. The 54-year-old actor sustained multiple stab wounds near his neck and spine.

He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in an auto-rickshaw, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors later reported that he was out of danger.
