Carlsen’s decision to withdraw from the competition last Friday was prompted by a ruling that prohibited him from wearing jeans, which he had on during the event.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) responded to the controversy by relaxing its dress code, allowing for “elegant minor deviations” from the previously strict guidelines. This change means players can now wear appropriate jeans that match their jackets.

Carlsen, a five-time world champion, was fined $200 for breaching the dress code after wearing jeans in a few rounds, alongside a shirt and blazer. He explained that he had not considered changing out of his jeans after a lunch meeting prior to the tournament.

Initially, when informed of the dress code violation, Carlsen offered to change his trousers for the following day but was told he needed to do so immediately, which he refused. This led to his withdrawal from the competition and a statement about leaving New York for a more pleasant destination.
