While premarital medical tests have been compulsory for both Emiratis and expatriates, genetic testing was previously optional. The new mandate seeks to proactively identify hereditary diseases by screening for over 570 genetic mutations associated with conditions such as cardiomyopathy, genetic epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hearing loss, and cystic fibrosis.

This initiative aligned with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071, which emphasizes sustainable development and the integration of advanced medical technologies. By establishing a national genetic database, the strategy will enable early medical intervention, paving the way for healthier generations to come.

“The move will usher in a transformative shift in the healthcare sector, leveraging advanced genomic technologies for proactive and sustainable healthcare,” the Ministry of Health and Prevention stated .
