OpenAI has officially launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of a 12-day product release series, with availability starting today on Sora.com for ChatGPT subscribers in the US and many other countries. The new Sora Turbo model enhances features like video generation from text, image animation, and video remixing.

With a ChatGPT Plus subscription, users can generate up to 50 priority videos (1,000 credits) at a resolution of 720p and a maximum duration of 5 seconds. Meanwhile, the $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro subscription offers unlimited video generations, up to 500 priority videos, 1080p resolution, 20-second durations, and the ability to download videos without watermarks. Pro users can also perform up to five generations simultaneously.

OpenAI initially teased Sora in February, and tech reviewer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) confirmed the launch during a livestream where OpenAI showcased the platform’s new explore page featuring community-generated videos. Noteworthy features include “storyboards” for creating videos from a sequence of prompts and a “remix” tool for modifying outputs with text.

Sora product lead Rohan Sahai acknowledged the challenges of balancing moderation with creative expression, stating that they are starting conservatively and welcome user feedback on moderation effectiveness.

For users without a ChatGPT subscription, browsing the feed of AI-generated videos remains accessible. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that a rollout in much of Europe and the UK may take some time.

In terms of content guidelines, OpenAI stated that videos generated with Sora will include visible watermarks and C2PA metadata to signify they are AI-created. Users must agree that their uploads do not contain underage individuals, explicit or violent content, or copyrighted material; violations could lead to account suspension or bans.
