KP government forms supervisory committee for peace in Kurram

A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa supervisory committee was established on Monday to ensure the restoration of law and order in the Kurram district, according to an official statement.

Adviser to the KP Chief Minister on Information Dr Muhammad Ali Saif would lead the committee. Provincial Minister Aftab Alam has been nominated as a committee member.

Officials from the civil administration and law enforcement agencies would also be part of the committee.

The committee aims to ensure the effective implementation of government decisions, the statement further added. “It will undertake practical measures to establish and sustain peace in the Kurram district.”

It merits here mentioning that the Thall Parachinar Main Road and multiple routes in Kurram district remain closed, resulting in a significant shortage of essential goods in Parachinar city. Residents face dire conditions due to a complete lack of food items, medicines, fuel, and other necessities.

Police have regularly struggled to control violence in Kurram, which was part of the semi-autonomous Federally Administered Tribal Areas until it was merged with KP in 2018.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said 79 people had been killed in the region between July and October in sectarian clashes.

The feuding is generally rekindled by disputes over land in the rugged mountainous region, and fuelled by underlying tensions between the communities.
