Another defunct aircraft to be transferred from Karachi to Hyderabad by road

An aircraft that made a crash landing in 2011 would be transferred from Karachi to Hyderabad by road, according to the Pakistan Airport Authority.

The transfer is scheduled for Tuesday, with the aircraft measuring 160 feet in length and weighing 60 tons. The second defunct aircraft would be moved to Hyderabad during the night between Monday and Tuesday.

Last month, a retired Boeing 737 was moved from Karachi to Hyderabad on a specially designed truck. The overland journey covered 154 kilometres in approximately two and a half hours. It was the first time in the country that a defunct aircraft was being transferred to the city by road.

It reminded Pakistanis of a similar instance when three Boeing 777s were transported by road through Saudi Arabia’s deserts in September.

“An MD-83 aircraft would be transferred from the Jinnah International Airport to Hyderabad on Monday night,” Project Director Munir Alam said.

The necessary no-objection certificate (NOC) has been obtained from the relevant authorities for the transfer of the defunct aircraft.

It would be transported using a modern truck via the National Highway, taking the route through Gharo and Thatta.

The transfer would occur in two parts and it would be the second aircraft moved to the Pakistan Airport Authority’s training institute in Kati.
