“Extending the tenure of services’ chiefs would disadvantage many officers,” he told reporters outside the Parliament House on Monday. “These amendments are not beneficial for the government or the military.”

His reaction came after the government rushed through bills seeking an increase in the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 34 and an extension in the tenure of services’ chiefs.

The government also passed bills to increase the number of judges in the Islamabad High Court from eight to 12 and amendments to the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure (Amendment) Ordinance.

Ayub highlighted that the government bulldozed the bills through Parliament without giving the opposition adequate time for discussion.

He warned that the same laws would be used against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Pakistan Peoples Party, leaving them with “no avenue for escape when the time comes.”

PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan stated that no bill was passed according to the rules, as the bill did not go through the standing committee or undergo any debate.

Gohar pointed out that the number of Supreme Court judges has been raised to 34 while India currently has only 33 judges.

He added that there are 96 judges in the high court at present, alleging that the government aims to place its judges in the Supreme Court, which he deemed a “mistake”. The PTI chairman was of the view that “undermining one pillar of the government equates to weakening the government itself.”

Gohar termed the method of legislation as “flawed” and that there should not be an extension of the service chiefs’ tenure, highlighting that the government had previously indicated a desire to increase the number of judges.
