Karachi faces severe water crisis as infrastructure damage leaves neighbourhoods parched

Karachi is currently enduring a severe water crisis due to damage to its water infrastructure at multiple locations. Many neighborhoods have been left without water for the past four days, prompting the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to announce that water supplies will soon be restored to all affected areas.

The crisis began when a main pipeline was damaged during construction for the Red Line project on University Road.

Affected neighborhoods include Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, PIB Colony, Liaquatabad, Ranchore Line, Old City Area, Saddar, Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, and Malir.

In an effort to address the situation, KWSC has been working on repairs that were expected to be completed by Thursday evening. However, complications arose when water began leaking from a pipeline in Old Sabzi Mandi, leading to millions of gallons of water wastage and disrupting traffic on the busy road.

A spokesperson for KWSC stated, “Our staff has repaired the damaged pipelines and changed the valves at three locations, while work is ongoing at the fourth site.” They also confirmed that two ruptures in the major pipeline near University Road had been plugged.

In a positive development, water inflow in Keenjhar Lake from the Indus River has increased, and repair work has been non-stop for the past two days. The spokesperson assured that water supplies would soon return to normal.

As of now, KWSC officials report that the repairs have been completed and water supply has resumed. It may take 24 to 28 hours for the supply to be fully restored across the city.
