Karachi’s jail begins providing electricity to the city

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah inaugurated two significant solar energy projects in Karachi: the conversion of Karachi Central Jail to solar power and the partial solarization of the Dow University of Health Sciences Ojha Campus.

Karachi Central Jail, which previously required over 549 kilowatts of electricity, now receives 614.8 kilowatts from its new solar power system under the Sindh Solar Energy Project. Any excess power generated will be fed back into the K-Electric grid.

The project cost Rs216 million and is expected to recoup its investment within three years, saving the provincial treasury an estimated Rs64.26 million annually for the next 25 years.

Simultaneously, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a solar power project at the Dow University of Health Sciences Ojha Campus.

Twelve out of 27 buildings on campus are now powered by solar energy, a project undertaken in collaboration with the World Bank under the Sindh Solar Energy Project.

This project cost Rs290 million and generates 2.32 megawatts of solar power. It is projected to recover its costs within two and a half years.
