SSGC imposes conical baffles charges in utility bills

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has started imposing charges for the installation of conical baffles as part of its geyser campaign, according to media reports.

Consumers within its 3.2 million-strong network have been billed an extra Rs2,085, categorized as “conical baffle” charges.

This has caused alarm among many consumers, particularly those who do not have geysers in their homes, as such extra charges were applied before any installation took place, leading to increased public frustration.

In response to the complaints, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority clarified that the installation of conical baffles was approved to enhance safety and decrease gas consumption.

OGRA advised consumers who do not own geysers but have been charged to lodge complaints with either SSGC or OGRA.

Officials from the SSGC confirmed that surveys were carried out prior to implementing the charges, which were approved by OGRA.

Contractors have begun installing the baffles in specified areas. The company has encouraged consumers to visit their nearest customer facilitation centers if they have any questions or concerns about such charges.

The installation of conical baffles is part of the government’s “energy conservation initiatives”. SSGC has also launched a public awareness campaign highlighting the “benefits of these baffles.”

Consumers can “save up to 25% on their gas bills by installing conical baffles in their geysers while also contributing to the national effort of conserving gas by as much as 45%.” The SSGC has appointed contractors to carry out the installation of baffles in designated areas.
