Rediff News has claimed that four lieutenant generals, including National Defence University (NDU) President Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor, have retired.

The report further suggests that three or four officers are expected to be promoted to lieutenant general.

While the Inter-Services Public Relations has not yet officially announced such retirements, Rediff names Federal Public Service Commission Chairman Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz, former Corps Commander (Quetta) Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor, Chief of Logistics Staff Lieutenant General Saqib Mehmood Malik, and Defence Secretary Lieutenant General Muhammad Ali as those who have retired.

The India-based media outlet claimed that the Pakistan Army has 24 three-star generals, with the report detailing their branch affiliations. “13 are from the infantry, two from the engineers, one from air defence, five from armoured corps, two from artillery, and one from the electrical and mechanical engineers. This suggests the likelihood of three to four generals being promoted.”

It merits mentioning that the number of lieutenant generals is never 24, it is around 29.

The report alleged that Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir may make further changes to his team in the coming days or weeks.

Last month, Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik took charge as the new director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence. According to the report, he is close to the army chief.

It merits mentioning that Rediff misreported several army officers’ designations in its report.
