FBR issues statement related to last date for income tax returns filing

The Federal Board of Revenue has clarified that there is no extension on the last day for filing income tax returns as the authority refuted reports related to any extension.

“FBR refutes the news being circulating in the media about extension in the last date for filing of income tax returns for tax year 2024,” the FBR said in a statement on Monday.

“It is hereby clarified that no such extension is being granted and the last date for filing of returns is today ie 30th [of] September 2024.”

The board advised all eligible taxpayers to file their income tax returns before the deadline to avoid punitive actions.

Screengrab via X.

Recent reports suggested that a request for a 15-day extension for income tax return submissions had been sent to the finance minister. But the FBR also denied that.

According to the FBR spokesperson, no letter regarding an extension has been sent to the Ministry of Finance and no summary for such an extension has been submitted.

It is noteworthy that the system has been heavily burdened during the submission period, with approximately 2.9 million returns filed by September 28. In contrast, only 1.4 million returns were submitted by the same date last year.

Trade organizations and tax bar associations have been advocating for a one-month extension for filing income tax returns.

Last year, there were only 300,000 new filers, while this year the number has surged to 723,000.

He further mentioned that non-filers would not be able to purchase vehicles or property and decisions regarding under-filers would also be made.
