Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram has stated that Afghanistan’s internal and external issues can only be resolved through a shared strategy and collaborative actions. While acknowledging disagreements with many of the Afghan Taliban’s policies, Akram emphasized the necessity of maintaining communication.

In an interview with Voice of America on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Akram stated that Pakistan does not support isolating the Afghan Taliban. He stressed that the Afghan people should not bear the brunt of the Afghan government’s mistakes.

He clarified that Pakistan is taking necessary actions to ensure its security, while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic efforts where required.

Highlighting Pakistan’s priorities at the General Assembly, Akram stated that economic and social development is their primary focus, followed by the situations in Kashmir, Palestine, and Afghanistan.

He confirmed that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s visit will include a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, although a formal meeting with President Biden is not scheduled. The Prime Minister is also expected to meet with leaders of other key countries.
