In an interview with Voice of America on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Akram stated that Pakistan does not support isolating the Afghan Taliban. He stressed that the Afghan people should not bear the brunt of the Afghan government’s mistakes.

He clarified that Pakistan is taking necessary actions to ensure its security, while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic efforts where required.

Highlighting Pakistan’s priorities at the General Assembly, Akram stated that economic and social development is their primary focus, followed by the situations in Kashmir, Palestine, and Afghanistan.

He confirmed that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s visit will include a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, although a formal meeting with President Biden is not scheduled. The Prime Minister is also expected to meet with leaders of other key countries.

Akram further revealed that Prime Minister Sharif will address both the General Assembly and the Security Council. His speech will focus on these important issues.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance, Akram stated that geography cannot be altered and maintaining relations with neighboring countries is essential. Despite disagreements with the Afghan Taliban’s policies, he highlighted the importance of communication. He acknowledged several issues but stressed that Pakistan’s relationship is with the Afghan people.

He reiterated that the relationship between Afghanistan and the Pakistani people remains unchanged. Pakistan is committed to working towards resolving differences with the Afghan government. He expressed Pakistan’s desire to see the unfreezing of Afghan assets and to rectify the Afghan government’s mistakes. He also emphasized that Pakistan has a comprehensive policy regarding Afghanistan, which will continue.
