Jail IG denies ‘fake’ reports that privilege being given to Karsaz accident suspect

Sheeba Shah, the women barrack’s DIG at the Karachi Central Jail, denied on Monday reports that the Karachi Karsaz road accident’s prime suspect was given special privilege.

“The way other females are here in this barrack… all these fake social media reports, I will term them fake. She [Karachi Karsaz road accident suspect] does not go home,” she told Aaj News on Monday.

Her clarification comes after reports that the jail authorities were providing extra facilities to the suspect, including a separate room allocated for her.

At least two people, including a woman, were killed and seven injured when the woman driver of a car lost control and struck several vehicles in the city on August 19.

The suspect was identified as Natasha Iqbal. Last month, a city court sent her to jail on a 14-day judicial remand over allegedly killing two people in the accident.

Sheeba explained that the jail has a barrack system, countering rumours by saying that other inmates could also see Natasha if leaving the prison at night. “She [Natasha] does not have a separate room and living in one of the six barracks.”

The accused is being held in jail’s Barrack No 4 where she has access to the same facilities as other inmates, according to the women’s prison’s DIG.

She clarified that Natasha was receiving facilities following prison regulations, and special attention was given to cleanliness in the women’s jail. He suggested that the negative comments about the jail stem from “personal animosity.”
