Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Muslim sister Qamar Shaikh will once again visit India this year to tie a rakhi (sacred thread) on his wrist for the Hindu festival of Raksha Bandhan.

According to reports in the Indian media, this will be the 30th consecutive year that Qamar Shaikh, who hails from a Muslim family in Karachi, Pakistan, has performed this ritual for Modi.

Shaikh has been tying the rakhi on Modi’s wrist since he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

She herself prepares the rakhi with her own hands to give to her ‘brother’ Modi.

Shaikh, whose original name was Qamar Mohsin Shaikh, married an Indian man and migrated to India in 1981.

Despite the political tensions between India and Pakistan, this annual ritual showcases the personal bond between Modi and his Pakistani-origin ‘sister’.

Shaikh remains hopeful that she will be able to tie the rakhi on Modi’s wrist for the 30th time this year as well, continuing this unique tradition they have shared for the past three decades.
