Domestic consumers using up to 200 units per month would be exempted from the tariff hike for the next three months, it stated. For the rest of the domestic consumers, the basic electricity tariff has been increased by Rs7.12 per unit.

Last week, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved an increase of up to Rs7.12 in the tariff for electricity consumers in the country.

According to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s announcement, the government would provide relief to people consuming less than 200 units of electricity for the next three months.

The relief would apply from July to September 2024, aimed at alleviating the burden on low-income households. The federal government has allocated a subsidy of Rs50 billion to offset the tariff reduction.

The new basic tariff for domestic consumers has been set at Rs48.84 per unit, as per Nepra’s decision. The tariff for consumers using 201 to 300 units per month has been increased to Rs34.26 per unit with such a massive increase.

The notification added that the tariff has been increased by Rs7.02 per unit, raising the rate to Rs 39.15 per unit, for consumers using 301 to 400 units per month.

For the slab of 401 to 500 units per month, the tariff has been hiked by Rs6.12 per unit, making it Rs41.36 per unit.

Consumers using 501 to 600 units would pay Rs42.78 per unit, an increase of Rs6.12 per unit. The tariff for 601 to 700 units per month has been raised from Rs6.12 to Rs43.92 per unit.

For usage above 700 units, the tariff has been increased by Rs6.12 to Rs48.84 per unit.

After adding the applicable taxes, the effective per unit tariff has risen across all slabs. The lifeline consumers using up to 50 units per month would continue to pay Rs3.95 per unit.
