Sindh bans speeches of 143 religious scholars, preachers during Muharram

The Sindh Home Department has imposed a 60-day ban on the travel and speeches of 143 religious scholars and preachers (ulema and zakireen) across 13 districts in the province, citing security concerns during the upcoming month of Muharram.

According to a notification issued by the provincial government, Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon had recommended the restrictions on these individuals.

The Home Department stated that the ban has been implemented “viewing the law and order situation” expected during the sacred Islamic month.

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

During this period, massive mourning processions and religious gatherings are held across the country, requiring tight security arrangements.

To further enhance security measures, the provincial governments have also sought the temporary suspension of six major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, from Muharram 6 to 11.

This is aimed at curbing the spread of hate speech and misinformation that could potentially incite sectarian violence.

Meanwhile, the central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to convene a meeting in Quetta on Saturday to sight the crescent moon for the month of Muharram 1446 Hijri.

Zonal and district-level Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also hold simultaneous meetings at their respective headquarters.

The federal government, however, has not yet taken any decision regarding the suspension of internet services during Muharram, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior.
