Polite thief leaves apology note after robbing retired India teachers

A thief who robbed the home of a retired teacher couple in India’s Tamil Nadu left an apology note promising to return the stolen items within a month.

The robbery took place on June 17 when Selvin and his wife, both retired teachers, left their home in Megnanapuram’s Sathankulam area to visit their son in Chennai. They had hired a domestic helper, Selvi, to clean the house in their absence.

When Selvi visited the home on June 26, she was shocked to find the main door open. Upon inspection, Selvin discovered he had been robbed of Rs 60,000 in cash and 12 grams of gold jewelry, including a pair of silver anklets.

However, the most intriguing aspect was the apology note the thief had left behind. The note stated: “Forgive me. I will return this in a month. I am doing this if someone in my house is not well.”

Megnanapuram police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

This is not the first time such a polite thief has emerged in India - a similar incident occurred last year in Kerala where a burglar who stole a gold necklace from a 3-year-old later returned the money earned from selling it, along with an apology.

The motive behind the Tamil Nadu robbery remains unclear, but the thief’s promise to return the stolen items has certainly added an intriguing element to the case.
