‘Camel must be kept standing continuously’ to save it

It was necessary to keep the brutalised camel from Sindh’s Sanghar standing continuously to save her life, Sarah Jahangir, the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji director, said.

According to a BBC Urdu report, she stated that the camel’s hind leg has been amputated and they were consulting experts in Dubai for its treatment.

“The permanent solution is an artificial limb. The camel is only 8 months old. If it sits down, it may face issues with its stomach and gas, which could be life-threatening. Therefore, it will have to be kept standing continuously,” Sarah said.

The camel was brought to CDRS shelter in Karachi on Saturday after right leg was allegedly chopped off by a landlord as punishment for foraging into his field for fodder in Mund Jamrao village in Sanghar district earlier this week.

Sarah’s organisation has affectionately named the brutalised camel as ‘Cammie’. Their team has been posting updates on its social media platforms.

“Smaller animals like cats or dogs can manage on three legs, but it is much more difficult for larger animals. This camel will now stay permanently at the shelter, as disabled animals are of no use to anyone,” she added.

The police have registered the case on behalf of the state, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident and ensure appropriate action is taken.
