State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller was asked in Monday’s routine press briefing about how laws in Gerogia could be undermining democracy but did not take a stronger position on something like the illegal nikkah case.

Miller replied that ‘context’ had to be taken into account in such matters.

“So I just don’t have any further comment on the case. We look at – when we look at different countries, we take into account appropriate context, circumstances in making our judgments,” Miller said.

“We’ve addressed the question of Imran Khan many times. The legal proceedings against him are something for the Pakistani courts to decide in – I’d say in accordance with their laws and constitution,” he added.

When pressed, Miller added that certain charges had already ben thrown out by the Pakistani courts.

“It is our position that it – when you come to these laws in Pakistan and this court case, it is something for the Pakistani courts to decide. And you just saw, to this question, charges against him thrown out by the courts,” he said.

Former PM Imran Khan was acquitted in the cipher case on Monday. However, his release from jail could not take place as he is still jailed in the illegal nikkah case.
