Yasir Shami interim bail extended in Aamir Liaquat’s video case

A court in Karachi extended on Thursday the interim bail of TV host Yasir Shami till June 6 in a case related to leaking indecent videos online of late politician and anchorperson Aamir Liaquat Hussain.

Shami, who has been named as a suspect in the case, had moved the court seeking bail in the case.

The objectionable video featured the late politician in a state of complete undress in his home, allegedly after the consumption of an illegal substance. The video was leaked a couple of days after news broke of the dissolution of his third marriage.

Liaquat, a former MNA, passed away in Karachi on June 9, 2022, under mysterious circumstances. He was laid to rest on Friday in the compound of Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine.

Last year, a judicial magistrate indicted Dania Shah, the widow of a late politician, in the case. Later, she got bail in the case. Last week, the court conducted a hearing of the case. Liaquat’s widow, Dania, also appeared in the court. Shami surrendered himself to the court and sought bail in the case. The request was approved and the suspect was ordered to pay Rs500,000 of surety bonds to the court.

The suspect’s lawyer stated that his client was from Lahore and requested the court to approve his bail and issue another date.

Later, the court extended Shami’s interim bail until June 6 and adjourned the hearing due to the absence of the FIA prosecutor.

While speaking on the court premises, the TV host: “I am a journalist myself, and I have worked while adhering to journalistic principles. I broadcast the video after editing it. Section 21 of PECA has been imposed on me.”

He claimed that the issue was related to the issue of the deceased’s property. “I have full trust in the courts.”
