He claimed that the UN Charter was being abused and making his point by putting a printout of the charter through a shredder as he stood at the podium.

The vote by the 193-member General Assembly was a global survey of support for the Palestinian bid to become a full UN member – a move that would effectively recognise a Palestinian state – after the United States vetoed it in the UN Security Council last month.

The assembly adopted a resolution with 143 votes in favour and nine against - including the US and Israel - while 25 countries abstained. It does not give the Palestinians full UN membership, but simply recognises them as qualified to join.

“With this new precedent, we may see here representatives of ISIS or Boko Haram that will sit among us,” Erdan said, referring to two militant groups.

He said it would give “the rights of a state to an entity that is already partly controlled by terrorists, and will be replaced by a force of child-murdering Hamas rapists.”

Meanwhile, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour described the vote as “historic” and “significant”.

“The day will come where Palestine will take its rightful place among the community of free nations,” he said before Friday’s vote.
