No proposal to increase CJ term to 3 years, clarifies Tarar

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has refuted claims about a proposal to increase the chief justice’s term of office to three years.

Speaking to Geo News on Saturday, Tarar said that no such proposal has been tabled or is under consideration.

He said that the speculation on social media about any such decision is ‘baseless’.

Multiple TV channels had claimed that the government is mulling a proposal to allow every chief justice to remain in office for a three-year term.

The reports had suggested that the new rule could impact Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, who is set to reach the age of superannuation in October this year.

The rule if implemented could also impact who would become the chief justice in the future.

The speculation had begun soon after the Chief Justice of Pakistan met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the matter of a letter by six high court judges, alleging interference by intelligence agencies.

The CJP had requested the government to form a judicial commission to investigate the allegations.

The government notified the commission on Saturday, appointing former CJP Tassaduq Hussain Jillani as its head.
