A 100-year-old mosque in Swat is still standing tall and providing worshippers with place of calm and quiet to pray.

The mosque, located in Jurra village of Swat’s Matta tehsil, has walls made of stone and roof made of mud. The mosque is adorned with intricately carved wooden furniture, which has stood the test of time.

The mosque consists of courtyard with bright green grass, that the villagers ensure is kept neatly trimmed.

<picture></picture>

The mosque’s building stands on two sides of the mosque’s courtyard in an L-shape.

<picture></picture>

Being covered with a mud roof helps the worshippers stay cool even during the harshest of summers. In later years, ceiling fans have also been added to the mosque.

<picture></picture>

At the other end of the courtyard is perhaps the most unique part of the mosque: a well with a counterpoise lift.

The well consists of a long wooden lever with a weight attached to it. At the other end is a bucket attached to a chain that is lowered using the lever. The ancient well design is believed to have been used in ancient Greece and Egypt.

The well is fed by a natural stream and provides water for ablution to worshippers since the mosque was founded.
