UAE rewards Pakistani man for fixing traffic signal on his own

The United Arab Emirates has rewarded a Pakistani man who fixed a traffic signal after finding it broken a few days ago.

Zeeshan Ahmed, who came to UAE from Pakistan over 10 years ago, works as a delivery rider in the gulf country.

He was on the job but did not have an active delivery order when he passed Al Wasl Street in Dubai one day where he found the lower part of a traffic signal perilously hanging down.

Ahmed stopped his motorcylce and fixed the dangling light and went on his way again.

“I was just driving along Al Wasl Street because I did not have a delivery order at the time. I suddenly noticed the broken signal,” he told Khaleej Times.

He said that he thought that the dangling panel could hurt someone if it fell off.

“It was a windy day, and I worried it might hit a pedestrian or another driver. So, I quickly parked my bike and attempted to fix it,” Zeeshan added.

However, he did not know at the time that someone was recording the whole incident on video and it would later go viral on social media.

The video made it to the Roads and Transport Authority who called Ahmed’s employer and asked for his contact details. He then received a call from the RTA who said they wanted to honour him.

Ahmed added that he had fixed the light as a ‘humanitarian gesture’ and not for recognition.

“We delivery riders are always on the road and see many things. We reach places a lot of people don’t reach. So, I think it is our duty to help as much as possible.”
