Islamabad police shut down 462 accounts for spreading extremism online

Islamabad police said on Tuesday that they had taken down 462 social media accounts that were inciting hate online.

The police said that its anti-extremism unit said that the accounts were inciting hate along religious, ethnic and sectarian lines that could pose a risk to society.

Out of the 462 accounts that were shut down, 350 had circulated terrorism-related material while 47 were found engaging in anti-Pakistan propaganda. Another 65 accounts were disseminating content that could incite religious hatred.

The police said that a total of 1,522 accounts had been flagged for inappropriate content for which it had written a letter to the Federal Investigation Agency.

The police added that 1,060 accounts that remained on the list will hopefully be taken down soon.

In a post on X, the police also called upon the general public to stay away from ‘negative activities’ on social media.

It also said that taking down the accounts would help in better policing and legal action will be taken against the people involved.
