IHC sentences DC Islamabad to 6 months in jail

Islamabad High Court sentenced Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Memon to six months in jail for misconduct and contempt on Friday.

The deputy commissioner, who says he will appeal the verdict, is accused of ordering the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shaheryar Afridi under MPO in contravention of court orders.

Justice Babar Sattar announced the verdict which had been reserved on February 21.

The court has also found other officials guilty and sentenced them to jail. However, the sentences have been suspended for a month and no one is being put behind bars immediately.

Islamabad’s SSP operations has been given four month imprisonment while SHO Margalla has been sentenced to two months in jail.

The DC had ordered Afridi’s arrest after the violent protests of May 9 under section (3) of the Maintainance of Public Order.

Islamabad High Court had ordered the release of Shehryar Afridi, who was being held under the MPO. However, the DC immediately reordered his arrest under the MPO citing he had received a ‘source report’.

The court had ruled that the rearrest amounted to ‘belittling’ court orders.

Justice Sattar also said that the arrest orders under MP were synchronised to keep people in jail even after the court ordered their release.
