Court indicts Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi in £190m reference

An Accountability Court on Tuesday indicted PTI founder Imran Khan and former First Lady Bushra Bibi in the £190 million reference.

Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana conducted a hearing on the case inside Adiala jail.

Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in jail in the illegal nikkah case on February 4, two days after they were handed a 14-year sentence in the case, known as Toshakhana criminal case.

The former prime minister remains incarcerated in the Adiala jail while his wife is put under house arrest at Islamabad’s Bani Gala residence.

The £190 million reference

The £190 million case is about UK’s National Crime Agency which in 2019 agreed a £190 million settlement with the Malik Riaz family after a frozen funds investigation.

Following an out-of-court settlement with the property tycoon, the UK agency had said funds had to be returned to the government of Pakistan.

The NCA had accepted a settlement offer of £190 million, which includes a UK property – 1 Hyde Park Place, London, W2 2LH – valued at approximately £50 million and all of the funds in the frozen accounts.

The authorities allege that Khan and his wife received land worth millions of dollars as a bribe from a real estate tycoon through the Al-Qadir Trust.

The Trust is a non-governmental welfare organisation established by Bushra and the former prime minister when he was still in office.
