“This Maulana Sb’s constitutional right. But as far as I know him, I don’t see this alliance happening,” Marriyum Aurangzeb said in an interview with Aaj News on Thursday.

The parties revealed their agreement after a delegation from the PTI called on Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman on Thursday to discuss the post-election scenario in the country. But the two parties declined to announce any specific measures including protests, adding instead that they would work on a possible strategy for the future.

Fazl was the president of the multi-party confab – Pakistan Democratic Movement alliance – that ousted the former prime minister Imran Khan’s government through a vote of no-confidence in April 2021.

But his bombshell interview with Nadeem Malik of Samaa shocked many politicians. Fazl claimed that former army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ex-spymaster Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who was the then-Peshawar corps commander, had guided all political parties regarding the no-trust vote against former prime minister Imran Khan and the PTI government.

In reaction to the meeting between old nemeses, PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique praised Fazl for his “bravery” and “intelligence”.

In his post on X, he reminded the PTI of the old times when former prime minister Imran Khan used to demean Fazl and how the recent political development prompted the party to meet Fazl.

In another post, he claimed that Khan’s party would take another “u-turn” and meet with former president Asif Ali Zardari.

PPP’s Faisal Karim Kundi slammed the agreement, saying that the two parties killed their narrative. “It has to be seen when the PTI chief and Fazl would apologise to each other.”

While reacting to the interview, he asked the religio-political leader to answer who was the biggest beneficiary after the ouster of Khan from the government.

Senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira was of the view that statements after the grievances have “other meanings”.

In an interview with Shahzeb Khanzada of Geo News, he said that Fazl used to preside over the meetings related to the no-confidence motion against Khan.

Kaira maintained that he could not comment on the statements without listening to the complete interview.

“If General Faiz told Maulana to do what he had to do [with the no-confidence vote], but only within the system, then it means that we are not supporting Imran Khan. How did this mean that General Faiz was supporting no-confidence?”
