Roads flooded and traffic choked as Karachi receives heavy rain

Roads and underpasses were flooded while traffic was choked on major arteries after several parts of Karachi received heavy rainfall on Saturday.

The traffic flow was affected on Shahrah-e-Faisal along with Jahangir Road and several others due to accumulated rainwater while several underpasses were also filled with water.

Several neighbourhoods plunged into darkness after several electricity feeders tripped as the light rain turned into heavy rainfall across the city.

Strong winds with heavy rain were reported in Surjani Town, Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Johar, Saddar, Jamshed Road and adjacent areas.

Video footage shared on social media showed vehicles submerged in the rainwater on Shahrah-e-Faisal Road, Tariq Road and I.I Chundrigar Road.

Additionally, Merewether Clock Tower, Nazimabad, and Liyari also received downpours in the evening hours.

Meanwhile, the flight operation was suspended at the Jinnah International Airport due to heavy rain.

A Karachi-bound flight of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was diverted to Lahore amid harsh weather in the metropolis.

It is pertinent to mention that the Pakistan Meteorological Department had predicted more heavy rain and snowfall in parts of the country from January 31 to February 4.

The Met Office predicted light to moderate rain in Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jacobabad, and Kashmore on February 2 and 3, while cold and partly cloudy weather was expected in other parts of the province.
