India meddled in Canada elections, says intelligence report

India had interfered in Canada’s election, the North American country’s intelligence agency has claimed, India Today reported.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s report described India as a “foreign interference threat”. It urged the government to “do more to protect Canada’s robust democratic institutions and processes.”

The revelations come four months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an emergency statement to the House of Commons said that it was “actively pursuing credible allegations” linking Indian government agents to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia in June.

Later in November, US prosecutors accused an agent of the Indian government of directing the attempted assassination of an American citizen on US soil. The indictment released by the Department of Justice revealed new details about India’s alleged targeting of Sikh activists around the world.

A commission of inquiry was ordered by the government of Trudeau in Ottawa. It is examining foreign interference in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections.

Trudeau secured a third election victory in 2021 as Canadians handed him a minority government for the second time in two years.

The top-secret briefing report was obtained by Canadian media Global News. India’s interference would worsen if not intervened, it added.

The declassified document also names China.

“The PRC’s FI activities are broad in scope and significant in the level of expended resources. The activities are significant, pervasive, and directed against all levels of government and civil society across the country,” the report states.
