How much domestic consumers will pay in monthly bills after gas price increase

Despite domestic and commercial consumers facing prolonged gas load-shedding since the beginning of winter, Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL) has increased the tariff, leaving many to wonder how much they will be paying in monthly bills.

We now have an answer.

SSGCL issued a notification of new prices on the recommendation of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra), effective November 2023.

Under the fresh tariff policy, the authority has classified domestic consumers into two categories, “non-protected” and “protected”.

Consumers who used 91 cubic meters or more from November 2023 to February 2024 will be categorized as non-protected.

The category of “protected” consumers includes consumers using less than 91 cubic meters during the specified period.

The notification indicates that protected consumers will now have to pay Rs1350 per month instead of Rs650 in their gas bills.

Karachi gas load-shedding continues in Ramazan

Gas supply starts resuming in over 16 areas of Karachi

Govt hikes gas prices by upto 172%

As per the notification, consumers falling under the non-protected category will receive a minimum bill of Rs1,400 but it could be as high as Rs87,000. The minimum bill comes to Rs1440 because they will be paying a fixed amount of Rs1,000. If gas consumption increases beyond 150 cubic meters, the fixed amount will rise to Rs2,000.

Protected consumers will pay a monthly rent of a meter of Rs400

At least 18% general sales tax will be levied on gas consumption in both categories.
