India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke an 11-day fast after the inauguration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

Modi, wearing a golden-coloured traditional dress, uncovered the statue of Ram, placed in the heart of the 50-metre temple, built at the place where Babri Mosquestood for at least five centuries.

The mosque was torn down in 1992 by Hindus of the so-called secular country as they believe that the ground is the birthplace of their God Ram.

However, Premier Modi after unveiling the statue of Ram broke his fast when Govind Dev Maharaj fed him ‘Charanamrit’ (a sweet drink made with milk used for rituals).

According to India Today, Maharaj also appreciated Modi’s devotion to successfully completing his 11-day fast.

Modi announced his fast on January 12 in an audio message posted on his official YouTube channel, in which he said he was fortunate to be a witness to what he described as a ‘historic’ and ‘auspicious’ event.

“Only 11 days are left for the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of the Ram temple. God created me to represent the people of India during the consecration. Keeping this in mind, I am starting a special ritual for 11 days from today,” he said quoted by India Today.

Over 8,000 high-profile guests including Indian tycoons, celebs, cricketers and others have been invited to the temple’s inauguration and the event will be closed to the general public.
