Fact check: Have Pakistani airports introduced new charges for passengers?

News reports emerged on Friday that Civil Aviation Authority had imposed new charges of Rs100 on each domestic passenger travelling through Pakistan’s airports. The claim is false.

While the CAA did notify airport charges worth Rs100, the charges are not new but have only been placed given a different name.

CAA Spokesperson Saifullah confirmed to Aaj Digital that the money was already being collected as ‘security charges’ but will now be ‘airport charges’.

With only a name change taking place, no new charges have been levied on domestic passengers who travel through airports.

The notification by the CAA had said that the charges would be collected by airlines and then handed over to the CAA.

    <iframe
        class="nk-iframe" onload="setInterval(()=>{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)"
        width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative"

        sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

The CAA had also issued show-cause notices Serene Air and Air Blue over flight delays and cancellations that had impacted ‘hundreds’ of passengers.

The airlines have been told that they could face fines or even license cancellations or reduced flights if they fail to provide a satisfactory answer.
