In rare visit, Fazl lands in Kabul to discuss security issues

Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman reached Kabul on Sunday where he is expected to discuss security issues with key office holders of the Taliban government.

Afghan oulet Ariana News reported that Rehman held a meeting with Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, the deputy prime minister of Afghanistan after his arrival in the country.

A post on JUI’F’s account said earlier that the party chief was heading to Kabul on ‘special invitation’ from the Afghan Taliban government.

The post added that Rehman was accompanied by senior members of his party on the visit.

The members of the JUI delegation include Maulana Abdul Wasay, Maulana Salahuddin and Maulana Jamaluddin among others.

Afghan government spokesperson Zaibullah Mujahid had also confirmed the visit.

Read: PM Kakar blames Taliban-led Afghan govt for rising terrorism in Pakistan

JUI-F said that Rehman would discuss regional and security issues in talks with high-ranking officials from the Taliban government.

He had recently told reporters that he had been invited by the Afghan government after approval from the senior leadership of the Taliban.

He had added that he would also visit Haibatullah Akhundzada, the supreme leader of the Taliban, in Qandahar. The reclusive Akhunzada is known to rarely meet foreign dignitaries.

The visit to Kabul comes amid a spike in terror attacks in Pakistan, for which the country has blamed elements in Afghanistan. Rehman Himself narrowly survived a terrorist attack recently.

It also comes soon after Pakistan undertook a massive drive to deport illegal Afghan refugees from the country.

Afghanistan demands better treatment of refugees

Maulana met Afghan Prime Minister Muhammad Hassan Akhund, who demanded that Pakistan should end the ‘unjust’ treatment being meted out to Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Reports said that Maulana paid tribute to the ‘supreme’ victory achieved by the Taliban against a foreign invasion.

The Afghan PM said that the visit could lead to brotherly ties improving among the two countries.

AKhund said that Afghanistan did not intend to cause problems for any of its neighboring country.
