Has Cricket Australia really dedicated World Cup trophy to Imran Khan?

Just after rumours of Ricky Ponting describing cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan as a “book in the Australian academy”, there is another claim making rounds on social media that the Cricket Australia has dedicated their 2023 World Cup trophy to the 1992 world champion team’s skipper.

The claim was made by journalist Sabir Shakir. In a post on X, erstwhile Twitter, he shared an alleged letter by Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley and Chairman Mike Baird.

The Pat Cummins-led side silenced the world’s biggest stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19 after defeating India by six wickets in the final of the Men’s 50-over World Cup to claim their sixth title.

“Australia has dedicated the World Cup to Imran Khan and invited him as the chief guest,” he wrote on social media. But the letter, which he shared, showed some glaring editing mistakes and one of the major errors was the high font of “Medal of the Order of Australia” written in the letter.

So far, neither the Australian High Commission Islamabad—which has been referred to as the sender in the letter—nor the Cricket Australia has made any such announcement.

Many experts and cricket lovers mocked Shakir for his post and one of the users advised him to “take out some time to learn editing” rather than making such posts.
