The interim Taliban government and Iran have agreed to establish a corridor through Afghanistan’s Wakhan to connect the Islamic republic with China and Uzbekistan, an official said.

In a post on X, spokesperson for the Taliban government Zabihullah Mujahid said that the two countries have emphasised appointing joint teams to boost the ground and practical work for the corridor’s establishment.

Afghanistan’s delegation arrived in Iran on November 4. The 30-member delegation was led by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Taliban government Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Mujahid said that the delegation discussed increasing Afghanistan’s exports and imports through the Chabahar port of Iran.

During the meeting, the two parties also talked about connecting Iran with Uzbekistan through Afghanistan and extending the railway project along the route to the Wakhan corridor, he added.

They also stressed the extension of the railway line to Kandahar, the Taliban spokesperson said.

The two countries also agreed to fight against drugs and smuggling along with joint efforts to find alternative livelihoods for Afghan farmers, Mujahid added.

According to him, the exemption of land tax from both sides, measures to establish a trade balance with Iran, the preferential tariff on some Afghan exports, and establishing joint committees to solve the problems of refugees also came under discussion.
