Shahid Afridi turns down role in PCB

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has refused to take up any role in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee.

The development came after Afridi met Zada Ashraf, chairman of the PCB Management Committee in Lahore on Friday.

The two discussed the current performance of the cricket team after the former captain arrived at the Qaddafi Stadium Lahore. Afridi left the stadium without speaking to the media.

During the meeting, Ashraf acknowledged Afridi’s dedication and contribution towards the game, a statement by the PCB said.

“We admire you as a hero of Pakistan, and you have proved to be a great ambassador of the country with both your exceptional talent displayed on the field and your conduct off the field. We would love to have your experience for the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” he added.

The former allrounder expressed his interest in grooming young cricketers into future stars and positively shaping them into well-rounded representatives of Pakistan cricket.

He also admired and appreciated Ashraf’s efforts and contributions for Pakistan cricket.

It is worth mentioning that the meeting took place just a day after Afridi met with the interim Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar to discuss cricket issues including his association with the PCB in the future.

The two discussed various topics, including how to improve the quality of cricket, in the meeting, sources added.

Afridi and Kakar talked about the performance of the Babar Azam-led unit in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 and the grooming of cricketers from the grassroots to the international level.

Ashraf came under severe criticism after he showed a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between national cricket team captain Babar Azam and CEO Salman Naseer, which was aired on TV during the interview.
