Maryam, Shehbaz leave for London as political landscape changes

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader Maryam Nawaz departed for London early on Thursday to meet her father, who is set to return to Pakistan next month. Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif soon departed the country as well.

The departures come after Maryam and Shahbaz reportedly met on Wednesday night to discuss important political matters including Nawaz’s return to Pakistan. Nawaz had recently announced that he would return to Pakistan on October 21.

However, the political landscape has changed since then with the Supreme Court of Pakistan striking down NAB amendments and PPP demanding a level playing field for all parties.

Shehbaz’s departure within 48 hours of his arrival on Tuesday after spending around a month in London has led to speculation that all might not be well.

The two are expected to apprise Nawaz of the latest political developments, including the reopening of NAB cases in light of a recent Supreme Court judgement.

    <iframe
        class="nk-iframe" onload="setInterval(()=>{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)"
        width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative"

Sources said that the two leaders could relay an ‘important message’ to Nawaz.

The developments come soon after Nawaz made a statement in London promising accountability for former generals and judges who had ousted him from power.

Nawaz has been in exile in London since 2019 when he was released from jail and allowed to travel abroad on medical grounds.
