“The Chief Election Commissioner is invited for a meeting with the President today or tomorrow to fix an appropriate date,” the letter sent by the president stated.

President Alvi said that the National Assembly was dissolved on the advice of the prime minister on August 9.

“And Whereas by virtue of Article 48 (5) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is obliged to appoint a date not later than ninety days from the date of dissolution for the holding of the General Election of Assembly,” the president wrote in the letter.

He mentioned that the president is to appoint a date, not later than ninety days from the date of the dissolution, for the holding of a general election to the Assembly and appoint a caretaker Cabinet.

The National Assembly was dissolved after President Alvi signed a summary for the dissolution on August 9.

Former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif sent the summary after receiving it from the ministry of parliamentary affairs.

The law states that even if the president does not sign the summary the assembly stands dissolved 48 hours after the summary is sent. However, the president signed the document brining and end to the coalition government’s tenure in the centre.
