No new mobile phone operator awarded licence, clarifies PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has clarified that no new operator has been awarded a mobile cellular license to offer mobile services in the country.

The clarification comes after recent misconceptions amongst the public and social media users regarding a new operator launching mobile services in Pakistan under the name “ONIC”.

The Pakistan Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), which already owns the Ufone brand, intended to launch another new digital product “ONIC” to cater for a digital segment of the market that prefered convenient engagement instead of traditional service delivery for high-end users.

It added that the PTA has been in active communication with the PTML regarding their plans to launch “ONIC”. “In line with the commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer protection, PTA has advised PTML to fulfil all necessary regulatory requirements.”

ONIC website says it was Pakistan’s first digital telco. It offers different packages for users.
