Butt was ill for a long time and he was in a state of unconscious for the past two years, according to his family.

“The PCB is saddened by the news of the passing of former Test cricketer and ex-PCB chairman Ijaz Butt,” the national cricket board tweeted. “Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Butt was a former wicketkeeper batter and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. He made his debut against West Indies in Karachi on February 20, 1959, according to ESPN cricinfo. He played his last match against England in Oval in August 1962.

Butt was named PCB chairman in October 2008. His stint was mixed baggage, according to many experts.

In the year after he took over as PCB chief, Pakistan was stripped of several international fixtures after the Sri Lankan team tour bus was targeted.

In the same year, Pakistan won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Younis Khan with memorable performances from Shahid Afridi, Umar Gul, Shoaib Malik, and Misbahul Haq.

In 2010, the national team was marred by a match-fixing scandal when Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt, and Mohammad Asif were found involved in fixing a Test match against England.
