PML-N will not let elections delayed, says Afnan Ullah Khan

PML-N’s Senator Afnan Ullah Khan said on Monday that the PML-N wants the elections to be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly.

“There is no concession in the Constitution that allows delaying elections for more than 90 days. You will have to suspend the Constitution to do such a thing and we will not let it happen,” he said on Aaj News show Faisla Aap Ka.

Khan was of the view that the interim setup in the Centre will become ineffective after completing its 90-day tenure; however, he said that the interim governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa extended because there “had been such precedence in past”.

“This happened in 2008. Elections in KP were held with the Centre. But no such thing has happened on the national level,” he added.

PPP’s Faisal Karim Kundi said that the discussion over the caretaker setup is going on between the coalition parties; however, no name has been shortlisted for the top slot in the interim setup.

“PPP has not yet shared its names. It is possible that the PML-N in its party meetings consulted over Ishaq Dar’s name but it has not been shared with the PPP,” he added.

He was against the holding of the census before the elections, saying that at present Punjab and KP are ruled by interim governments who do not have public mandate.

“How can a government which is not elected through votes and lacks public mandate represent me in the Council of Common Interests?” he questioned.

Instead, he said that the next government should be given a mandate to hold a new census within a year after it is elected.

Legal expert Shah Khawar was against the banning of political parties, saying that such action did not result in anything good in the past.

He was responding to a question regarding the tabling of the bill titled ‘The Prevention of Violent Extremism Bill 2023’ in the Senate on July 30.

“A chapter is already placed in the Election Act 2017 for banning a political party. There is no need to enact other laws to ban political parties,” he added.
