Petition filed to stop Punjab caretaker govt from working

A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court to stop Punjab’s caretaker government from working as its tenure has ended.

The petition was filed by lawyer Aftab Bajwa on Monday. The petitoner has made the Election Commission of Pakistan as well as Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi a party in the case.

Bajwa has argued that the tenure stipulated in the constitution for the caretaker government has ended and Mohsin Naqvi and his cabinet are illegally occupying his post.

It adds that after the expiry of the 90-day tenure, all of the caretaker government’s actions are in violation of the constitution.

The petition also says that while the Supreme Court extended the date for elections, it did not give an extension to the caretaker government.

The petitioner has asked the court to immediately stop the government from working and to remove the chief minister and cabinet from their posts.

The petition also says that the court should order the ECp to notify a new caretaker government and the current set-up should not be allowed to make major decisions until the new one takes power.
