Five months after his death, Musharraf’s case set for hearing before Supreme Court

Five months after his death, the Supreme Court of Pakistan is set to conduct a hearing on former president Pervez Musharraf’s appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers.

A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial hear the appeal on July 20.

Former president Pervez Musharraf challenged the rejection of his nomination papers in 2013. A hearing was held on his petition five years ago.

Musharraf, who seized power in a coup in 1999, died in Dubai aged 79 on February 5 after a prolonged illness.

He took power by deposing then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after relations between the two leaders deteriorated.

Musharraf stepped down in 2008 while facing possible impeachment.

His political party All Pakistan Muslim League, launched in 2010, failed to win any significant seats in two subsequent general elections.

He chose to live in self-imposed exile in the United Arab Emirates after he was charged with treason in 2014.
