Torrential rain in Lahore on Wednesday broke 30-year-old records, leading to at least seven deaths across the city.

The rains began as gentle downpours in the morning but eventually turned into heavy downpours leading to urban flooding in many areas.

Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi tweeted that 272 mm of rain had been recorded in just nine hours.

With inches of water on the roads, three people died of electrocution. The deceased include 17-year-old Ihtisham who died on Akhri Mint, an unidentified man in Qenchi and a woman near Masti gate. Two people were killed because of a roof collapse and one person drowned as well.

Naqvi confirmed at least six deaths as he spoke to reporters in the afternoon. Another fatality was reported later in the day.

Many busy roads across the city including Mall Road, Canal Road, Queens Road, Mohni Road, Garhi Shahu Road and Davis Road were filled with water.

The rain also caused atleast 110 electricity feeders to trip across the city. LESCO said that rains were further complicating efforts to restore electricity.

Second Spell of rain is expected at 9pm today: CM Punjab

Naqvi visited various areas of Lahore and directed the provincial authorities, National Disaster Management Authority, Rescue 1122; and Water and Sewerage Authority to take measures for water drainage.
