PHC to take up KP election delay case on Wednesday

The Peshawar High Court is set to take up a case regarding delayed elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.

The case will be heard by Chief Justice Musarrat Hilali and Justice Shakeel Ahmad.

The court had asked the governor and the election commission to submit replies on the last hearing.

The KP assembly was dissolved in January by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as an attempt to force the PDM-led government in the centre to hold elections throughout the country.

    <iframe
        class="nk-iframe" onload="setInterval(()=>{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)"
        width="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="height:400px;position:relative"
        src="https://www.aajenglish.tv/news/card/30316242"
        sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

However, despite the 90-day limit mandated in the constitution for holding elections having gone by, elections have not taken place and are not in sight.

Despite lengthy negotiations, the governor of KP refused to provide a date for elections as he and the ECP continued to negotiate.

When the Election Commission delayed elections in Punjab to October 8, the KP governor also announced that elections would be held on the same date.

The PTI has already approached the Supreme Court for elections in Punjab. The top court had set elections in the largest province for May 14. That deadline is also set to expire in a few days with no elections seeming possible.

However, the PTI had faced criticism from the government for not pursuing the KP elections as enthusiastically as the ones in Punjab.

Meanwhile, the government has continued to press for elections across the country on a single day, claiming that staggered elections could cause chaos in the country.
